Disappointment
Jesus came to me in a dream. He gave me investment advice. Buy and hold, He said. Small caps for the long term. That’s it? I thought as I woke to the day’s first light shining through the hole I cut for a window in my cardboard box. Investment advice? No water for my arid desolation? No strength for my rickety soul? No wisdom to build a sacred space? Still I wondered if He meant value or growth.
Blinded by No Light
Roy was freshly back from the dead, Mama standing bedside warming his still-cool purple hand. The doctor explained he’d been legally deceased for 30 minutes before returning with a miracle. Roy shook in a caged panic.
“Mama, you’ve been right all along,” Roy sobbed. “I’m going to hell.”
“Hell? Now, let’s just get our rest, sweetie.” Momma dismissed such talk as part of the stress of being dead.
“There was no light, Mama. I didn’t see no light.”
